Stephen Ministry

Christ Caring for People through People

What is Stephen Ministry?  Stephen Ministers provide one-to-one, confidential Christian care to people in our St. Paul’s Congregation and community who are experiencing difficulties in their lives.

Who needs a Stephen Minster?  Any person experiencing a life crisis or challenge; the needs of care receivers may include divorce, loss of a loved one, hospitalization, terminal illness, loneliness, relocation, unemployment, retirement, empty nest, and other life transitions.

Who is a Stephen Minister?  A congregation member who is recruited, selected, trained, commissioned, and supervised by Stephen Leaders to provide one-to-one Christian care to persons in need or  hurting.  Stephen Ministers typically are assigned one care receiver at a time and meet with that person for about one hour each week. Stephen Ministers usually serve for two years, which includes an initial 50 hours of training followed by twice-monthly supervision and continuing education sessions.

Who is a Stephen Leader?  Pastors or lay leaders who have completed a Stephen Series Leader's Training Course and directs Stephen Ministry in his or her congregation. St. Paul’s currently has five Stephen Leaders, trained, equipped to lead, supervise and support.  They work together as a team, each overseeing different aspects of Stephen Ministry.

What are the differences between St. Paul’s Caregiver Ministry and Stephen Ministry?
Both Stephen Ministers and St. Paul’s Caregivers are centered on the love of Christ and a desire to show that love to people in need.  Our Caregiver ministry will continue to visit the homebound, hospitalized, sick and grieving members, offer meals or rides to an appointment.   However, here are a few differences:

  Stephen Ministry:
50 hrs training
Confidential
Listening-based
Individualized: One Stephen Minister for each care receiver
  Caregiver Ministry:
Quarterly training
Names often offered for prayer in bulletins and services
Many people, divided into teams
Teams rotate monthly
