One hundred and fifty years ago, the faithful of St. Paul’s made a decision which affects you and our church family today. With great foresight, prayer and sacrificial giving, the members began a process that led to the building of one of the most beautiful churches in our city. Wilmington was a changing community, and our forbearers of the Gospel met the challenges of the time. They did more than build a structure; they responded to the Great Commission of Christ to “Go” and “make disciples.”
Generations that followed did their part in advancing the causes of Christ and his church. New and improved facilities have been added to that first structure in order to enhance and enlarge the mission of St. Paul’s.
We are dedicated to remaining a vibrant church in downtown Wilmington continuing the traditions that were founded in faith. Now it is our turn to respond to the call of Christ, and to see the many wonders that God has planned for us. It is our hope that St. Paul’s will live up to it’s heritage by glorifying God and serving the needs of God’s people in the 21st century with the same active faith as it did in the 19th century. Just as our forbearers did for us, we are forging the future for those to come.
Our mission involves taking the next faithful step in becoming the church that God expects for our time. Our goal is to address the present and future needs of St. Paul’s through a Capital Campaign. This campaign has three objectives:
First, we want to redesign our facilities around our ministry needs, including a “welcome center” with ample gathering space before and after worship; a multipurpose auditorium for our Wednesday evening worship, concerts and productions; more accessible Sunday School and meeting rooms; adequate space for our music department and choir rehearsal; and offices for administration of our ministries.
Second, we need to replenish our Capital Reserves so that we can have adequate financial resources for major repairs or maintenance emergencies in the future.
Third, we want to establish a Mission Partners Fund that will enable us to support future seminarians from our church, new missions, and missionaries who are making Christ known in our state and around the world. This fund will keep us focused, not only on our local mission, but also on the wider work of our synod and the church at large.
When these goals are accomplished, we will have both the facilities and the resources we need to fulfill our God-given potential and bring more people to a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.
At the end of this Capital Campaign, if we can be remembered for nothing else, we would like to be able to say that we were as faithful as our forefathers who established St. Paul’s in 1858. That will be the legacy we can leave for future generations. We have been Founded in Faith, now let us set about Forging the Future.
